Apples and Oranges

by Eddie deGuzman

I finally managed to give my aikido/karate/tai chi ideas a walk through. I went through each karate kata(that I can remember) concentrating on tai chi foot work, a return to center and forward movement stepping heal to toe. All I can say is that it didn’t work. I found it very …uncomfortable moving into front stances. I assume that the longer stances are responsible for this. Of course, I know nothing of tai chi so perhaps it lies in my untrained movement. Now, I did these at a very slow pace so speeding it up might yield different results. But it might just be that while martial arts can be thrown into the same fruit basket, belonging to the same family, they might very well remain as different as apples and oranges.
